Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring Network
Reports to: Technical Director
Virginia

The Remote Sensing Analyst will be responsible for ongoing remote sensing work required by the Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring Network (TEAM), a global initiative to monitor long-term trends in biodiversity through a network of tropical field stations, providing an early warning system on the status of biodiversity that can effectively guide conservation action. The work of the Remote sensing analyst includes the gathering, maintainance and processing  of spatial digital products as part of the implementation of TEAM remote sensing protocols, a central role in developing implementation manuals for some of these protocols, participation in the review of the spatial components submitted to TEAM by candidate sites, ensuring the integrity of TEAM spatial information, developing standards for storing and maintaining spatial information into TEAM's database, and overseeing and maintaining TEAM's global field station database. The position requires a Master of Science in Geography, Environmental Sciences or related field, at least two years of advanced remote sensing analytical experience, basic programming skills for automation of spatial data analysis, and field experience and willingness to travel to remote tropical areas. The candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to  efficiently manage multiple activities and deliver quality products under tight deadlines, and willingness to respond quickly and adapt to dynamic priorities in an evolving program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the completion, implementation (in collaboration with partners) and periodic revision of the implementation manual for the TEAM Human-Ecosystem zone of interaction monitoring TEAM protocol (ZOI protocol). The implementation of this protocol involves compiling and overlaying of the required spatial layers, delineating the zone of interaction and performing the required monitoring analysis of the zone itself. As a result of this work, contribute to the production of scientific papers in high impact journals.
  • Participate in the review process of the sampling design proposal  for new TEAM sites following the guidelines of the Sampling Design Protocol. This includes, insuring that all digital layers received are in the correct format,  verifying that sampling units are placed in accordance to the protocol (e.g. number of sampling units and distance between them) and if required, providing feedback to partners regarding technical aspects of sampling design proposal.
  • Responsible for the integrity of spatial data for all sampling units at TEAM sites. This includes working with Site Managers to ensure spatial data is collected according to protocol across sites. This  might require travel to different TEAM sites to train personnel and collect  spatial information.
  • Work with TEAM Information Systems Manager to develop a plan for the storage, distribution and maintenance of spatial data into TEAM's central database. As part of this process, and working with other CABS personnel, oversee the process of metadata creation for all TEAM spatial data
  • Responsible for overseeing and maintaining TEAM's global field station database.

Working Conditions: International travel to remote locations (2-2.5 months a year) may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills:

  • A Master's degree in geography, environmental sciences or related field with emphasis on spatial data analysis.
  • Advanced remote sensing analytical experience and technical GIS and cartographic skills. At least one year of experience working with remote sensing packages such as IDRISI (preferred), ERDAS or ENVI.
  • Ability to automate spatial operations in common GIS and RS software. Basic programming skills for ArcGIS (AML, Python, VB) and for IDRISI is strongly preferred.
  • Field experience in tropical areas and availability to travel at least 20% of the time, and work in remote field locations under sometimes difficult conditions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Skills:
