The Center for Applied Biodiversity Science (CABS), established at Conservation International (CI) in 1998, has the mission of "Linking science with action to guide the conservation of nature worldwide." CABS places a heavy emphasis on producing peer-reviewed scientific papers to ensure a solid scientific foundation for the actions of CI while contributing to the field of conservation science more generally.
In order to increase the dissemination of our knowledge products to relevant audiences in conservation practice and beyond, CABS is seeking a Director for Scientific Outreach to be responsible for the following activities: 1) Delivering major communications products - CI Annual Science Report, newsletters, development of content for the science portion of the CI website); 2) Managing communications specialist staff and maximizing efficient production of specific project-based science publications; 3) Developing and coordinating a strategic international capacity-building program for conservation science education and training. The Director for Scientific Outreach must be a dynamic, motivated individual with a strong conviction in the value of science and a deep passion for global biodiversity conservation. The qualified candidate should have experience in management and strategic planning; an ability to communicate science clearly through written, graphical, and spoken media; knowledge of copyright law, open access trends, and current intellectual property policies and practices in scholarly publishing; and a practical familiarity with Web 2.0 communications tools and technologies.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver major communications products and measure publication impacts: work with scientific staff to direct and administer a CABS communications strategy; coordinate production and dissemination of all knowledge products (publications, maps, tools, etc.); oversee production of content for the science portion of the CI web site; edit and publish a CI Annual Science Report; develop metrics to assess the dissemination and impact of CABS science products; establish strategic open access policies and practices (60%)
- Assess and direct in-house publication production: evaluate current in-house publishing practices and develop methods to improve production efficiency; manage internal communications specialist staff; allocate staff time and resources for communications projects; review in-house publication needs and goals and develop appropriate strategies (20%)
- Develop and implement an international conservation science capacity-building strategy: review and evaluate current capacity-building activities (supervision of graduate students, university outreach, etc); develop strategic plans to address unmet capacity-building needs; establish practices to identify specific capacity-building opportunities and leverage the maximum benefit from CABS input; support fundraising for and implementation of these actions
