The Coral Triangle Initiative Coordinator position will oversee Conservation International’s role in the Coral Triangle Initiative, ensuring contributions to the priority Coral Triangle marine conservation outcomes. This includes special emphasis on priority seascapes, marine protected areas, threatened species recovery, and climate change adaptation. The position will be based at CI-Indonesia's Marine Program office in Bali but will need to coordinate closely with CI's marine programs in the Philippines, Melanesia, and CI Headquarters divisions. The Coordinator will have to work closely with CI's conservation partners in the Coral Triangle including NGOs, local government, and bilateral and multilateral funding agencies. This position will provide essential coordination between CI staff in the region and in headquarters, providing guidance to those staff on how they can best contribute to the initiative as well as guidance on CI's overall strategy for the Coral Triangle.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage with other NGOs, government officials, and bilateral and multilateral donors to develop the Coral Triangle Initiative, contributing key CI approaches and objectives
  • Represent CI internally and externally on the Coral Triangle Initiative and ensure CI’s key messages are communicated to CI’s internal and external audiences
  • Develop and maintain important relationships with IGO, NGO, government, and multilateral institution staff
  • Coordinate with CI staff in the region and in headquarters to develop and implement a CI strategy for the CTI 
  • Serve as a coordinator for communications between staff in the region and in headquarters 
  • Support engagement of CI HQ staff in the CTI
  • Support CI staff in the regions and headquarters by backstopping proposal writing and other key tasks
  • The position allows and requires that the individual represent the organization in interactions with IGOs, NGOs, academic, government, and multilateral institutions. Thus, this position requires significant judgment and discretion in order to effectively establish and maintain relationships and associations.

Working Conditions:  

  • The position involves working with CI staff in multiple countries and across divisions at headquarters in order accomplish work objectives and therefore requires excellent interpersonal skills in order to motivate, and influence others to accomplish work objectives.
  • The position may require up to 30% international and domestic travel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree/ 2-5 years

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in international development, public policy, marine conservation, or an equivalent degree
  • Proficiency in language from any of the six Coral Triangle countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste)
  • Field experience from any of the six Coral Triangle countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste)
  • Professional and academic experience in governmental environmental policy and international affairs, and knowledge and understanding of complex multilateral institutions
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and professionalism to engage and communicate with governments and other partners
  • Ability to understand complex, technical issues concerning conservation science, international development policy, and the politics surrounding bilateral and multilateral institutions that are critical to CI’s success and ability to fund and implement conservation programs in the regions where we work

Preferred Skills:

  • Master’s degree (MA or MS) in international development, public policy, marine conservation, or an equivalent degree
