Conservation International will be participating in the 16th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) from April 30 – May 5 and in the 4th meeting of the Working Group for the Review of Implementation (WGRI) of the CBD from May 7 –11. Our engagement will include providing technical support to Parties, meeting with intergovernmental bodies and non- governmental partners, and participating in side events.
In Montreal, CBD negotiators will address a variety of issues, including climate change safeguards, marine priority areas, incentives for conservation and funding targets, as they prepare for the 11th CBD Conference of the Parties in Hydrabad, India this October.
Their key aims include:
- Agreement on funding targets for implementation of the CBD’s new 10-year Strategic Plan, which outlines 20 global targets for conservation. Final agreement will be made in October but the negotiations in Montreal will set the stage by discussing possible targets, baselines, funding needs and priorities and different sources of funding.
- Agreement on scientific advice to the climate change convention on how to best implement and monitor initiatives for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD+) so that they avoid negative impacts on biodiversity and local and indigenous communities.
- Agree a list of globally important marine areas for protection.

We have also worked with partners to develop step-by-step guidance for countries who wish to identifying their funding needs for achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets established under the CBD at the last Conference of the Parties. We hope this will be a useful input to the dialogue on financing for CBD implementation, which requires national estimates of costs and funding needs.
