The 11th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity

Healthy biodiversity is the foundation of human well-being, yet the genes, species, habitats and ecological cycles that comprise our planet are threatened like never before. At CBD COP 11 in Hyderabad, India, nations worked to advance their commitments to protect the species and ecosystems that feed our families, cure our diseases and enrich our cultures. Building on a solid foundation of biodiversity and sustainable development expertise, CI is working with governments in pursuit of this ambitious goal.

What is the CBD?

Created in 1992 by the United Nations, the CBD is an international treaty dedicated to promoting sustainable development through conserving global biodiversity, promoting sustainable resource use and facilitating fair and equitable sharing of resource benefits by all stakeholders.

In 2010, participating countries committed to a ten year framework for action to save biodiversity and enhance its benefits for people. This framework is supported by 20 targets, collectively known as the Aichi Targets. If carried out, this plan will ensure that "by 2020 ecosystems are resilient and continue to provide essential services, thereby securing the planet's variety of life, and contributing to human well-being and poverty eradication." Two years into the plan, countries still have key decisions to make in order to successfully reach their goals by 2020. This gathering in Hyderabad provides a key opportunity for governments to figure out the details and put a solid foundation in place to inspire broad-based action in support of biodiversity — from freshwater provision to climate regulation — at a crucial time in our history.

CI's Goals at COP 11

At the Hyderabad meeting, delegations from 192 countries and the EU were joined by indigenous groups and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), including CI staff members working in 9 countries world-wide. In addition to acting in a general advisory capacity for government representatives, some members of CI staff served on the national delegations of their native countries, including Costa Rica, Madagascar and Ecuador.

Through CI's participation at Hyderabad, we supported CBD Parties as they worked to achieve an agreement on the amount of financing necessary to accomplish the Aichi Targets. In addition, we encouraged agreement on technical guidance on implementing the Targets, particularly on the safeguards necessary for REDD+​. CI's team was at COP 11 to ensure that 8 years from now, in 2020, we have successfully made advances towards a healthy and sustainable planet through slowing the loss of biodiversity in order to support our children and children's children for many generations to come.​​​​​​​​

Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Business in Brazil: The TEEB for Business Brazil Project
The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), a global study carried out from 2007-2010, focused on 'the global economic benefit of biological diversity, the costs of the loss of biodiversity and the failure to take protective measures versus the costs of effective conservation'. This side event celebrates the international launch of the TEEB for Business Brazil interim report by presenting the project´s preliminary results. Sponsoring companies and partner institutions will present their strategies for incorporating biodiversity into their strategic management and discuss risks and opportunities associated to the natural capital.
