Gerard J.J.M van Empel has more than 35 years of work experience, of which over 30 years is in emerging markets and developing countries.
His current positions as managing Director RIAS BV and Director of Rabo Financial Institutions Development BV include mobilizing practical know-how and technology for rural banking, agricultural and agribusiness sectors and projects and investment in financial institutions in developing countries and emerging markets. Project identification implementation and evaluation missions have been carried out.
Some of his previous involvements were in China, where he was Project Director for investment in rural bank, in Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda and Mozambique working on pre investment operational review for partner banks, and in Maleysia, Brazil, Phillipines and Vietnam, where he was a project director for establishing a new strategy for banks. Furthermore, he was Senior Consultant for agricultural and credit co-operative development in India (W.B.), Management Consultant to Ministry of Agriculture in Taiwan, Province of China, on policy issues, as well as Senior Consultant in Bank Rakyat Indonesia, where he set up an agribusiness department.
Prior to his Rabobank career he has also spent 3 years as Agricultural Attaché for the Netherlands in the USA, 4 years as an Agricultural Counselor in China and 5 years in Malawi as FAO expert.
