The Honorable Dorcas Makgato-Malesu is the current Minister of Trade and industry. She was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry on the 1st February 2010 after serving at the level of Assistant Minister in the same Ministry for few months. She is currently the youngest serving Minister in Cabinet, therefore, the current portfolio marks the pinnacle of her illustrious career.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry is responsible for, among others; the creation of a conducive business environment to facilitate the development of sustainable industries and trade. Her legacy, as the Minister of Trade and Industry, will be defined by the number of sustainable enterprises created, diversified economy, number of citizens meaningfully participating in the economy and the eradication of absolute poverty.
The Hon. Minister has served as the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO). During her tenure she successfully guided the Council to adopt the ARIPO Protocol on the Protection of Traditional Knowledge and Expressions of Folklore.
