The World Wilderness Congress (WWC), convened by the Wild Foundation, takes place every 3-5 years. The Congress assembles the global wilderness conservation community to focus on demonstrating the biological, economic, social and spiritual benefits of protecting nature; the various governance options for designating wilderness areas (government, indigenous and private sector); and wilderness management training.
In this respect, the ninth meeting of the WWC (also known as WILD9) will be no different from past events. However, the worsening climate change and biodiversity crises, combined with the upcoming UNFCCC Climate Conference in December (COP15) and the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) COP10 meeting in October of next year, provide an important opportunity for WILD9 to deliver a particularly strong message on climate change and the CBD’s Programme of Work on Protected Areas.
Related to both climate change and biodiversity loss, another important theme at WILD9 is marine wilderness and the need to establish a definition for marine protected areas. Marine wilderness areas are an important tool in adapting to climate change, and both terrestrial and marine protected areas are fundamental to supporting governments in achieving climate goals.
