Leatherback sea turtles have survived in the Pacific Ocean for 10 million years, but they may only have 10 years left, based on current trends. Every year, they journey from Costa Rica to the Galapagos Islands to feed and nest.
In a partnership with The Leatherback Trust, the Tagging of Pacific Predators (TOPP) program, and the Costa Rica Ministry of Environment and Energy, CI tagged and monitored 11 of the critically endangered creatures, setting the stage for the inaugural Great Turtle Race. Millions tuned in to watch online as the turtles navigated threats across the Pacific in a veritable race against time. Stephanie Colburtle the Turtle, Stephen’s adopted daughter, finished 2nd in the race. Where will you be when the turtles race again?
